Toyota tops car sales in canberra

04 July 2015 by News Desk

Toyota1The most popular cars sold in Canberra may be Toyota’s, but sales of Audi cars have grown 63%.

Toyota remains Canberra’s most popular new car, with 12.2% of the market, followed by Mazda (11.3%), Volkswagen (9.3%), Hyundai (8%) and Holden (7.6%). Latest new car sales figures show BMW sales in Canberra have increased by 7%, Mercedes (47%) and Audi (63%) in the past 12 months.

Of all car sales across the State, sales of prestige brands like BMW have seen the biggest rise, up 2.8% for the year to June. BMWs and Mercedes each made up 2.2% of sales in the first six months of 2015.

There are 5799 BMWs and 4400 Mercedes in the capital, making them the 11th and 13th most registered cars. New BMW prices vary from $40,000 to more than $300,000. The luxury car tax rate starts at $63,184.

Two Canberra suburbs – Nicholls in Gungahlin’s west and leafy Yarralumla – have the most BMWs. And Nicholls is also home to the second most Mercedes in the capital. O’Malley is number one for BMW ownership, and Fyshwick for Mercedes.

Australian favourites Holden and Ford have lost popularity in the capital, with Holden’s new car sales down 15% and Ford’s down 28%.
