New student housing for Brisbane
12 July 2015 by News DeskA popular inner-city food market in Brisbane looks set to be demolished to make way for new student housing.
There are plans to build a 41-story 144-metre tower on the site of the existing Wharf Central convenience centre. The proposal, lodged with the council this week, involves housing for 753 students and would include a rooftop terrace. The tower at 38 Wharf Street would have a mix of studio, four- and five-bed multi-share apartments.
The council’s development assessment chairman Amanda Cooper said the development was in keeping with the state governments’ desire for more student accommodation.
“The Lord Mayor has announced a new incentive to drive new student accommodation developments in inner Brisbane to meet the growing demand. We need student accommodation in medium and high-density residential locations with good access to public transport.
“Education is Brisbane’s biggest export. It is important to have the student accommodation our city needs for these students”.
