‘Voice-fest’ hits in Hobart

03 July 2015 by News Desk

ent_HobartVoiceFestMore than 2000 singers are gathering in Hobart for Australia’s annual celebration of the human voice.

The 11th Festival of Voices is set to feature 133 events at 27 venues over 18 days around Hobart, Launceston and the state’s East Coast.

The festival began with 300 school students performing at the Tasmania Sings concert, followed by 140 singers, including former The Voice star Darren Percival and the Southern Gospel Choir, performing a Ray Charles tribute show at Hobart City Hall.

Capacity crowds will see New York cabaret star Lady Rizo and veteran Australian entertainer Jeff Duff, along with Christa Hughes, Monique Brumby, Brendan Hay, Meow and Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham over the next eight nights.

There’s been a 114% rise in pre-sales this year and over 16,000 tickets are expected to be sold. Concerts by gospel act Sweet Honey In The Rock, former Spicks and Specks team captain Ella Hooper and 2014 Australian A Cappella Champion group Festival Statesmen have already sold out. Capacity crowds are also expected at shows by German a-cappella metal act Van Canto, ARIA Award-winner Katie Noonan and former Australian Idol winner Wes Carr

More than 5000 people are expected at the Bonfire and Big Sing free event at Salamanca on July 10, which will end with a huge community singalong of Bill Withers’ hit Lean On Me.
