Travel to Australia: Total passenger traffic between India and Australia has risen by 30%, leading the Australian government to seek more direct passenger services in a bid to boost tourism.
Around 160,000 people travelled from India to Australia in 2013 and last year the number of visitors increased to 242,000, an increase of 9.4%, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics and Tourism Australia.
The most popular Indian gateway for Australia-India traffic is Delhi, the base that Air India uses for its nonstop services to Melbourne and Sydney.
Delhi accounts for around 40% of all Australia-India bookings with Mumbai accounting for 15%.
Travel to Australia from India
Air India carried 142,000 passengers to and from Australia in 2015, of which 77,000 passengers were inbound from India to Australia.
The Australia to India market is still dominated by Southeast Asian flag carriers.
The total number of Australia-India travellers has increased by 30% with Air India accounting for half of the total growth in the market since 2013.
Singapore Airlines has a leading 41% share of the market. Malaysia Airlines also carries more Australia-India passengers than Air India.
A majority of Australia-India passengers fly between the two countries via intermediate hubs. Singapore has historically been the most popular followed by Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Melbourne and Sydney each account for 35% of total Australia-India bookings. Brisbane and Perth each account for another 10%. Secondary cities account for the remaining 10%.
