06 September 2016 by News Desk

When you emigrate to Australia the last thing you expect to hear from a bus driver is ‘look – no hands!’ but in Perth you can.

The new electric bus has been bought by the Royal Automotive Club of Western Australia at a cost of $250,000 and road trials will begin shortly with the aim of rolling out a public service.

The pioneering vehicle, made by French company NAVYA, will begin a series of stringent tests at the RAC Driver Training and Education Centre in Perth.

The 11-seat bus, called the RAC Intellibus, will carry passengers on a 1.6-mile route on Perth’s South Perth Esplanade. The self-driving vehicle has a top speed of 28 MPH but will travel at an average speed of 16 MPH.

“By giving Western Australians the chance to see the technology, to eventually use it and experience it, we are learning more about the technology and working towards WA being ready for driverless vehicles,” said Pat Walker of the RAC.

“This staged trial, the first of its kind in Australia, will help members of the community; Government and industry consider the potential impact and opportunities of automated vehicle technology.

“The trial will also help WA develop a roadmap of changes that will need to occur for automated vehicles to safely transition on to our roads.

“Increasing levels of automation in vehicles are an inevitable part of the future, and the notion of them being on our roads is not a question of if, but when.”

The bus has multi-sensor technology that provides 3D views allowing it to map the environment, detect obstacles on the road and interpret traffic signs.
