Hobart plans new ‘global’ attraction

22 June 2015 by News Desk

Hobart-towerDevelopers in Hobart are seeking to build a new 117m tower in the centre of Hobart that will be the tallest building in Tasmania.

The iconic new Detached Art Tower would be 50m higher than Tasmania’s current tallest building, Wrest Point, and offer stunning panoramic views across the city.

The semi-transparent steel tower, set to open in mid-2017, would include art galleries, project spaces and areas for public projects involving art, science and health. The tower is designed around a “double helix” of 1300 internal stairs making physical exertion an integral part of the experience.

Developers say the new building will rival famous landmarks around the world, provide Hobart and Tasmania with a new cultural icon and attract domestic and international visitors. The plans have yet to be approved by Hobart City Council.
