The city boasts many child-friendly activities including cycling along the Yarra River cycle path and the beach from St Kilda to Brighton; the Queen Victoria night markets and the popular Australian Open kids’ tennis day.

Highlighting the city’s suitability for family holidays the Lonely Planet guide highlights Melbourne’s reputation as the sporting capital of Australia along with its many festivals, galleries and museums.

The city’s food and coffee scene, many outdoor activities and easy access to the Great Ocean Road also scored high. At the Langham Hotel, a children’s high tea with a Frozen movie theme was noted as a highlight.

The travel guide recommends that visitor take a tram or horse ride to get around the city, suggests an al fresco pizza at St Kilda Beach before spending some time at Federation Square.

Lonely Planet last year named Sydney Harbour as Australia’s most friendly destination for family holidays, followed by Tasmania and Darwin.
