Emigrate to Australia: change to skilled visas

03 November 2016 by News Desk

Emigrate to Australia where government to remove 15 health occupations from the skilled occupation list.

Emigrate to AustraliaEmigrate to Australia has been a keyword for many doctors and health professionals seeking to live and work Down Under.

Now the government wants to remove 15 health occupations, including a number of medical specialists, from the ‘skills wanted’ list.

Government officials believe that Australia is reaching its required quota of health professionals following a rush on interest from British doctors who are fed up with pay and conditions in the UK.

The various occupations that face removal from the skills list include general practitioner, anaesthetist, paediatrician and cardiologist.

Overseas doctors seeking jobs in these positions would be unable to apply for entry to Australia with independent or family sponsored points tested visas or through temporary graduate visas.

However, the Australian health department and the AMA says overseas doctors and health professionals could apply via other visa categories including employer sponsored visas or temporary work visas.

Both medical organisations say that overseas trained doctors are still welcome in Australia.

There has been a 75 per cent increase in the number of British doctors seeking to work abroad.

In 2015 the UK General Medical Council issued 8,625 certificates of current professional status to doctors who were seeking to move overseas. So far in 2016 the GMC has issued 5,494 certificates.

Official data shows Australia is the most popular emigration destination among UK doctors. Next most popular destinations include New Zealand (723), Canada (538) and the United Arab Emirates (420).

There are currently over 7,500 British doctors working in Australia.
