COVID-19 cases in Australia

18 May 2020 by News Desk

COVID-19 in Australia: The country has had 7,060 confirmed cases of COVID-19 but there are now less than 600 active cases with 45 people in hospital including 12 in ICU and seven on ventilators.

More than one million tests have been conducted, with less than one per cent positive and more than 10 million telephone consultations have taken place.

Across Western Australia cafes, restaurants and pubs have re-openeddoors and workers returning to offices.

Tasmanian restaurants and cafes can also have up to 10 people seated inside. Queensland recorded two new cases while ACT reports two weeks without a new case of coronavirus and continues to have no active cases.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance encouraged people to drive to work and to walk distances shorter than 15 minutes.

He also warned of the need for people to re-time their days’ work in order to avoid peak hour travel.

A standard Friday rush-hour pre-pandemic would normally see 105 million vehicle movements on NSW’s roads.

Traffic numbers appear to be rising with 86 million movements recorded last Friday.

The government is unlikely to extend free childcare beyond June amid increasing demand for spaces as parents return to work.

But experts believe that overhauling the childcare sector to reduce the cost burden on families could help bring more women into the workplace, which would boost post-pandemic recovery.
