Brisbane drivers ‘least efficient’

14 August 2015 by News Desk

travel_cars2Motorists in Brisbane are being urged to drive more efficiently in order to save money and protect the environment.

The call comes as average petrol prices in the city have increased to around $1.35 per litre. A new study reveals that 95% of Brisbane road users fail to drive efficiently, a habit that costs them money and does little to aid the environment.

59% of Brisbane drivers polled in a survey by fuel company Caltex admitted leaving the air conditioning on when they didn’t need to. And while 17% of motorists claimed they want to help the environment by driving more efficiently, only 2% said they bought the most environmentally-friendly fuel.

Brisbane’s average unleaded fuel price in the past three months was $1.37, a price higher than same fuel in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

And it only takes a few small changes in driving habits to save money. Experts say that good driving techniques and a well-maintained vehicle will help lower fuel consumption and save money.

Top tips to save fuel:

Drive smoothly
Use higher gears
Tune your engine and keep it serviced
Keep tyres at correct pressure
Avoid carrying too much weight
Remove roof rack
Use recommended motor oil
Use premium fuel
Avoid excess idling
Plan trips carefully
