Australia seeks 1.5m students

12 February 2016 by News Desk

Australia is seeking to double the number of international students that live, work and study in the country.

AustraliaThe government says it wants to attract 1.5 million overseas students over the next decade. Australia is already one of the world’s Top Three destinations for study so they’ll be no shortage of applicants.

A record 640,000 students were enrolled in the first 11 months of 2015.

“Australia has reputation for high-quality education and, per capita, is already the world’s biggest international education provider” says Darrell Todd, CEO of thinkingaustralia.

“Our multi cultural society and laid-back lifestyle makes international students feel welcome which is why we remain a top student destination. A fall in the value of the Australian dollar has also made it cheaper to study down under.”

International students are allowed to work in Australia for up to four years after graduation, depending on their degree, and can work up to 40 hours per fortnight while they are studying.

There are a range of student visas available. To find the visa that’s right for you, see the links below for full details.

Education is Australia’s third-biggest export earner. Last year saw an 11 per cent increase with total revenues of $19.2 billion.

At the University of Sydney 25% of students come from overseas, generating $389m in fees. Chinese make up a quarter of all international student enrolments.

Now the government is investing millions of dollars to attract more international students.

“The education sector is a big growth opportunity which is helping to rebalance our economy following the end of the mining boom,” says Richard Colbeck, minister for tourism and international education.
