Australia retail sales rise 2.2%

05 August 2015 by News Desk

finance_cardThe property boom in Australia has fuelled a rise in sales of household goods, furniture and fittings.

Total retail sales in June have been driven by housing-related spending linked to new residential construction and government measures aimed at boosting small business investment, according to latest figures.

Cafes and restaurants recorded a rise of 1.2% while sales in ‘other’ retail sectors increased by 2%. But sales of clothing fell by 1.4% while sales in department stores and food outlets remained flat.

Retail sales in ‘non-mining’ states have risen by 3.5% over the past 12 months while sales in mining states such as Western Australia have risen by just 1.5% over the year.
