Australia PM under pressure

27 August 2015 by News Desk

TonyAbbott01Tony Abbott, the Prime Minister of Australia, is taking a bashing in opinion polls and could lose a national election if held now.

Abbot, who heads a coalition government, is now less popular than Labor party leader Bill Shorten who has overtaken Abbott in recent surveys which show Shorten on 54% while Abbott trails with 46% of votes. The polls suggest Shorten and the Australian Labor party would win a resounding victory if national elections were held any time soon.

In addition to preferring Shorten on political and economic issues, voters also put Shorten on top when it comes to personal credibility and wider popularity. Abbott, meanwhile, has seen his personal rating drop to 30% and ratings for his performance have also fallen among voters down under.

Darrell Todd of thinkingaustralia says: “Tony Abbott is having a rough ride right now. Members of his government are in-fighting over current economic policies and there is a major split over the issue of same-sex marriage.

“Mid-term governments always get a bashing in the polls, especially in uncertain times, but don’t rule Abbot out of the game just yet, two previous governments have fallen badly in polls yet bounced back to win at the elections”.
