Most expensive house in Australia

06 August 2015 by News Desk

property_PackerHouseIf you think houses are expensive in London, New York or Tokyo, think again, as the most expensive house in Australia has just been sold for… $70 million.

Australian billionaire James Packer has just sold his home in Perth for around $70m, the highest price ever paid for a property in Australia. The six-floor mansion-style house was built by Packer and completed in 2013 and has six bedrooms, a gymnasium, a 20 car garage and a 20-seat cinema. In 2009 Packer paid $30m to buy three properties that were later joined together, and a further $40m on extensions and improvements. The property has been sold following Packer’s recent divorce. His ex-wife was not a fan of the plush pad, saying that living in the mansion was like ‘living in a shopping mall’.

The previous Australian property record is $57.5 million, set in 2009 for a Perth riverside estate sold by mining heiress Angela Bennett. The record in Sydney, of $52m, was set in 2013 when a Chinese businessman bought a Point Piper waterfront property called Altona.
