US ban on kangaroo products

29 December 2015 by News Desk

kangarooThe sale and import of kangaroo products from Australia is to be banned in the US state of California.

The government of Australia says there are around 600 retailers in California selling kangaroo products such as meat, pet food and leather products including football boots and gloves used by fire fighters.

The import and sale of any Kangaroo product will be banned from Jan 1st 2016. California originally banned kangaroo products in 1971 but this ruling was overturned in 2007 after lobbying efforts of sportswear companies seeking to sell football boots made from kangaroo hide. Now violators will face fines or prison sentences.

Supporters of kangaroo farming say the practice is science-based, humane and environmentally sustainable while critics say it is a threat to the animals’ survival.
