Work in Australia: 2300 energy jobs

10 September 2016 by News Desk

Work in Australia: the new solar energy plants will also create thousands more indirect jobs.

Work in AustraliaWork in Australia: the six solar plants in Queensland, five plants in New South Wales and single plant in Western Australia are expected to provide enough power for 150,000 average Australian homes.

The 12 plants are due to deliver 10 per cent of the new capacity required to meet Australia’s 2020 renewable energy target, while also creating 2,300 direct jobs and “thousands more” indirect jobs.

The new energy plants, being built at a cost of $92m, will triple Australia’s energy generation from large scale solar farms.

The 12 projects, overseen by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, are expected to unlock almost $1bn of commercial investment and boost regional Australian economies.

Ivor Frischknecht, head of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, said the funding is a “major milestone” that would triple Australia’s large-scale solar capacity from 240MW to 720MW and also help ensure solar provided a competitive, sustainable energy option for the country.

“ARENA is working to accelerate Australia’s shift to a sustainable, affordable and reliable energy future and our work supporting the development of Australia’s large-scale solar industry is central to this vision,” he said in a speech announcing the funding.

A major increase in solar capacity is now “tantalisingly close”, Frischknecht said, suggesting all 12 solar projects could be completed by as soon as the end of next year.

“This is an aggressive timetable to lock in financing, off take arrangements, connection agreements and required approvals,” he explained. “Several are seeking debt financing for projects through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation’s complementary large-scale solar program.”
