Top tourist destinations in Melbourne
08 August 2015 by News DeskInternational visitors to Melbourne are more interested in seeing the city’s cultural attractions than visiting the beach or sporting venues.
The city’s tourist industry is booming. Since 2005 the number of international visitors to the city has grown at 3.7% each year and in 2014 over 1.3 million overseas tourists stayed in the city centre – and more than half of all international visitors will visit Queen Victoria Market and Federation Square, according to new research by Melbourne City Council.
Cultural institutions in the city have proved to be more popular among foreign visitors than the Bourke Street Mall, Southbank and beachside St Kilda, which is visited by 30% of overseas visitors.
Melbourne may be famous as a sporting city but Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says the city’s greatest strength is its diverse activities – more international tourists went to the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Museum (pictured), than visited the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
