Perth to be capital of W.A.
02 June 2015 by News DeskLegislation to officially recognise Perth as the capital city of Western Australia is now before State Parliament. It will also establish Perth City Council as the State’s main Local Government authority,
Lisa Scaffidi, Lord Mayor of Perth, said the City of Perth Act was bold and aims to develop stronger collaboration between the City of Perth, State and Federal governments and the private sector to strategically plan and manage Perth as a developing global city.
“Perth has grown rapidly and seen tremendous revitalisation boosted by a strong industry sector and population growth,” Ms Scaffidi said. “The city’s urban landscape is transforming with major developments coming to completion, and we have an economic and geographic advantage unrivalled by any other Australian city.”
The City of Perth Act expands Council boundaries to take in the University of Western Australia, Kings Park, the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre and the new Perth Children’s Hospital. Boundary changes are set to take effect from 1 July 2016.
