In the outer south east the municipality of Casey, including Berwick and Cranbourne, is now home to 292,000 people, the same number as Wollongong.

In the outer west Wyndham, including Point Cook and Werribee, has a population of 210,000, similar to Greater Geelong.

The Victorian government has set aside around $5 million to promote new development and jobs in Melbourne’s outer regions.

The Government aims to encourage growth in regional areas such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and the Latrobe Valley.

The ABS report said that since 2011, Greater Geelong’s population had risen by 14,000 to 229,420, while Greater Bendigo’s had increased by 6000 to 108,437.

Ballarat, population 100,000, has attracted an extra 6000 residents since 2011.

The government is spending $2 million on new green field construction and preparing former industrial sites for redevelopment including Alphington and Coburg.
