Job prospects improve for migrants

09 April 2011 by News Desk

job_vacancy_01Employment prospects for potential migrants to Australia continue to improve strongly, with news that the country’s unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9%.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ monthly labour force report revealed that 40,000 new jobs were created last month, equating to a 0.1 per cent decline in the national jobless rate. About two-thirds of the 37,800 jobs created last month were in the resource-rich states of Western Australia and Queensland

Darrell Todd, CEO of thinkingaustralia, says: “Australia now has a record number of working people. In the past 12 months more than 300,000 full time jobs have been created. The latest figures show that the number of jobs in Australia has increased by 32,100 – reflecting the success of Australia’s economic strategy and the strength of our economy. The 4.9 per cent employment rate is one of the lowest in the industrialised world.”

Minister for Jobs, Senator Chris Evans said the results were testament to the Government’s decisive and strong economic management and added that the figures also showed the Queensland labour market is improving with the jobless rate in Queensland falling to 5.5 per cent.

Following the news, the Australian dollar climbed to a 29-year peak against the US dollar. Earlier this year, the Reserve Bank predicted that employment would fall from 5 per cent to 4.5 per cent by mid-2013.
