Internet and moving to Australia

06 July 2016 by News Desk

Moving to Australia is a major step often started via the internet but what can you expect from the web when you arrive?

moving to australiaThere are many factors to consider when moving to Australia and internet speed is one of them.

“The internet is not a number one priority when people think about moving to Australia but once they arrive here it becomes an important issue,” says Darrell Todd, founder of thinkingaustralia.

The average peak download speed across the country is now 43mbps, a rise of 6.8% compared to last year.

Australia’s average download speed has also increased to 8.8 megabits per second, fast enough to watch YouTube videos but less than half the speed required to stream full-screen 4K TV from Netflix.

The majority of Australia’s internet runs over old-fashioned copper wires as used by the country’s existing landline telephone services. A new fibre-optic network is being rolled out but it’s late, over-budget and may not deliver the required high speeds.

In the recent Aussie election the Coalition government did not make the new National Broadband Network a major manifesto issue. But the Labor Party has pledged to install faster fibre connections to around two million homes.

Internet speeds in Australia are to get a major boost from a new superfast service being rolled out by a private company that seeks to connect all major capital cities.

Adelaide is to be the first city in Australia to get the service that delivers internet speeds up to 100-times the national average via the Gig City internet network.

Businesses and households will soon be able to access the internet at least 10 times faster than Australia’s new National Broadband Network.

“Travellers and migrants thinking of moving to Australia now expect and demand hi-speed internet access,” says Darrell Todd.

“Fast and reliable internet is important to visitors and vital for economic development and prosperity.”

Australia currently ranks 56th in the world for internet download speeds. It has fallen back in global rankings and three years ago it was in 30th place.

Singapore’s peak speeds have increased 49 per cent and are now 146mbps, over three times faster than Australia. Hong Kong, Indonesia and South Korea all deliver more than double the average download speeds in Australia.
