Emigration to Australia: family support
22 August 2016 by News DeskEmigration to Australia: help and support for families is now freely available Down Under.
Emigration to Australia is a life-changing experience and family life and routine is bound to be impacted, says Darrell Todd, founder of thinkingaustralia.
“It can take time to settle into a new home, routine and lifestyle and young people react to this in many different ways. Parents – and fathers in particular – can often feel out of their depth”.
Help and support is available through ParentWorks, Australia’s first online-only father-friendly free parenting service.
The program incorporates father-friendly elements such as after-hours access and modules of interest to fathers, such as dealing with bullying and encouraging play.
Olympic basketballer Andrew Gaze appears in a series of videos about the “Father Effect” that are being broadcast across TV, radio and online as part of a national media campaign.
“You sometimes look back and think, ‘well, you could’ve handled that a bit better’,” Andrew Gaze says in one of the videos.

“By and large it’s the mothers who seek help, talking to female practitioners. We know parenting programs work significantly better when both parents are involved,” says Professor Mark Dadds, director of the University of Sydney’s Child Behaviour Research Clinic.
ParentWorks is part of the national project Like Father Like Son headed by Professor Dadds, which aims to increase father participation in parenting programs.
Mums, dads and all caregivers in Australia can do the program individually or together, whether separated or living in the same household. People wanting to find out more or do the program can go to parentworks
