Emigrate to Australia: Canberra food markets

11 September 2016 by News Desk

Emigrate to Australia where Canberra’s cool climate produces distinctive products compared to warmer regions of Australia.

Emigrate to AustraliaEmigrate to Australia where Canberra has the right conditions to produce excellent wines, stone fruit, apples, cherries, the highly regarded Black Winter Truffle, excellent meat, mushrooms and fungi, and native Australian foods.

Organic and food miles factors play heavily in local food suppliers and our local restaurants and chefs have established excellent lines of supply for their dishes.

When you emigrate to Australia what you find at the markets, you may also find on your plate at your next restaurant meal.

Farmers Markets – Each Saturday in Canberra about 5000 visitors pass through the Capital Region Farmers Market to purchase and sample produce direct from the producer.

Established in 2004, these markets have more than 100 stallholders offering a rich and diverse selection of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, seafood, cheeses, nuts, honey, tasty baked goods and pre-made foods.

Tasty fresh food is not the only reason Canberra markets are popular – it’s about lower food miles and knowing that you are supporting local and regional farmers. Above all, the Capital Region Farmers Market is about linking the Canberra region’s food growers, makers and experts with local (and visiting) food lovers.

The Capital Region Farmers Market operates each Saturday morning from 7.30am – 11.30am at Exhibition Park in Canberra.

For more fresh produce markets in Canberra, try the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets open from Thursday to Sunday, or the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets run from Wednesday to Sunday. They are a great place to grab a bite to eat and soak up the bustling market activity.

Further south, the weekly Southside Farmers Markets sells biodynamic beef, free range eggs, fresh flowers, organic vegetables, freshly baked bread, fresh coffee and more. Open every Sunday from 9am until noon, these markets are held at the Canberra College in Phillip.

Craftspeople and farmers from all over the region converge on the showgrounds in the small rural village of Hall on the first Sunday of each month (except January) for the Hartley Hall Markets to offer everything from plants, furniture and clothing to toys, art and fresh farm produce.

In Murrumbateman, about half an hour from Canberra, the Murrumbateman Village Markets open every second and fourth Saturday from 9am until 1pm. You’ll find local produce including fresh fruit and vegetables, olives and olive products, eggs, cakes, coffee, bread, jams, honey, pickles, biodynamic beef, plants and fruit trees, alpacas and alpaca products, poultry, wine and locally made handicrafts.

Fresh fruit and vegetables – Beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables are the lifeblood of many of Canberra’s markets.

At the Capital Region Farmers Market, you’ll find local apple growers, Loriendale Orchard, who are renowned for their certified organic apples and grow 120 varieties, both heritage and modern.

Fruit also comes from far across the region with raspberries from Mittagong and cherries and blood red plums from Young – there’s always plenty to fill your fruit bowl and as with any market, seasonality is key.

Meats, seafood and smoked goods – There’s a good selection of meats and poultry on offer at many of the markets.

Delights of the sea also await with fresh prawns, oysters and an ever-changing school of fish, caught fresh on the NSW south coast, just two hours from Canberra.

Baked and sweet treats – At the markets you can sample the delicacies of Canberra’s talented bakers. You can spend your morning salivating over cakes, tarts, freshly baked bread, bagels, muffins, croissants and biscuits.

Locals Dream Cuisine use organic ingredients with classic French methods and Aussie creativity to produce rich chocolate brownies and organic lime tarts for a sweet taste – available at the Capital Region Farmers Market.

Gourmet delights – Skilled fine food specialists showcase the best in small goods, olive oils, chocolates, nuts, pates, sauces, chutneys, relishes and jams at our markets.

You may also like to taste a local wine or two from Four Winds Vineyard or the biodynamic wines from Lark Hill Biodynamic Wines. When in season, keep an eye out for locally produced Perigord Truffles, a highly prized ingredient for discerning gourmands.
