The vast majority of jobless temporary workers soon find new employment and contribute greatly to the Aussie economy.
457 visa holders are vital as they fill labour shortages in rural and regional Australia.
Peter Dutton, Australia’s immigration minister, told reporters the new policy aims to ensure the 457 visa program supplements rather than substitutes the Australian workforce.
“This change is about reducing competition from overseas workers for those Australians who are actively looking for work,” Mr Dutton said.

George Christensen MP has called for a complete ban on 457 visas in central and north Queensland.
South Australian MP Tony Pasin spoke out against demonising 457 visa holders: “We need a balanced approach, particularly in regional areas they often fill critical needs whether it is at the hospital or on the factory floor.
“Demonising foreign workers, such as health workers who make a difference in regional communities, is dangerous.”
