Australia says ‘yes’ to 190,000 migrants

map_australia01Around 190,000 migrants were accepted into Australia last year with the main source countries being India, China and the United Kingdom

Of those people migrating to Australia, 68% are skilled migrants and 32% are accepted on a family visa.

Of 128,550 Skilled migrants, 38% are employer sponsored, 34% are skilled independents, 22% are state, territory and regional nominated and 6% are business migrants. The top three occupation groups for Skilled migrants are Professionals (63.1%), Technicians and Trades Workers (22%) and Managers (8.6%).

Of 61,112 Family migrants, 79% are partners, 14% are parents, 6% are children and 1% are other migrant categories.

The migration programme size and composition is flexible and changes over time, from a smaller programme with mostly family migrants in 1993-94 to a larger programme with more skilled migrants in 2013-14. Planning levels are set by the government each year and the size and composition changes to meet the social and economic needs of Australia.
