A planned new deep water port in western Australia is set to create thousands of new jobs.
The Western Australia government has identified the new site at at Anketell, 30km east of Karratha, to handle a massive increase in production at API’s West Pilbara Iron Ore mine.
In the next five years, steel plants in China are forecast to consume more Australian iron ore than the country has exported in its entire history. Western Australia produces 70% of the country’s exports to China
The port is set to be used by Fortescue Metals Group, China Metallurgical Group and API Management, the Western Australia government says. The new development would include a port with more than 350 million tons in annual export capacity and an industrial area of more than 3,459 acres.
Operations at the new Anketell port may start by 2015, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett said.
