What does it mean to be an Australian permanent resident ? |
Yes, in the vast majority of cases you will not be required to surrender your existing citizenship. The Australian Government allows dual-nationality.
Australian permanent residents can:
- live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
- study in Australia at school or university
- receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
- access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
- be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
- sponsor people for permanent residence.

Can I keep my existing citizenship after I migrate ? |
Yes, in the vast majority of cases you will not be required to surrender your existing citizenship. The Australian Government allows dual-nationality. |
Can I bring my car / motorbike to Australia ? |
Yes you can, but you must obtain a "Vehicle Import Approval" and pay the relevant customs duty at the port of entry. Your migration agent will be able to advise you on the application process and necessary fees etc.
You also have to obtain quarantine clearance from the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) after the vehicle has arrived at the port of entry. |
If my application is successful, will I automatically become an Australian citizen ? |
No, to become an Australian citizen you will need to have first lived in Australia continuously for two years before you can apply for citizenship. |
